demonlover (2002)

DISCLAIMER: this is all very stream of consciousness, and i am not a writer. this is just me literally typing as I think and clicking post.and it will definitely show lol

uh it was fine. I initially watched it because i thought christina ricci was in it, but i guess it was just chloe sevigny with a bob? I’m trying to really sit with it and digest it all, but I just found it boring and drawn out. On the surface level, a movie about two corporations employing spies to acquire the rights to a gory sadistic animated porn site through violence/deceit/intimidation/blackmail etc should have been a (not FUN, but you know?) viewing experience. but it literally just…wasn’t.

where was the exploration of diane’s very obvious psychosexual obsession with elaine? where were the drugs, cruelty, and sadomasochism? Or maybe this reaction is all just a symptom of the movie’s thesis. At one point diane is kidnapped and set up to be featured on hellfire club, a torture porn site. i just found myself wanting to really SEE it. The violence in this movie was like being edged in a way. It was all weirdly restrained. even while diane and gina gershon’s character were covered in blood, writhing around trying to stab each other… it all felt so dull

i wanted the characters to really HUNGER for something. I have been reading a bunch of articles from FaT GiRL zine and it’s really made me think about my own relationship to desire and sexuaity as a fat lesbian. It is so crazy reading the zines because the women in it are so much more sexual than literally any fat woman i have seen in body positive content in the last 10-ish years. off topic, but it just made me think like...

Where did all the sexuality go?? why is no one horny?

Why was the rap*st the only character who showed strong emotion? Aside from the movie’s point that consuming large amounts of violence and porn (and violent porn) causes psychological damage, what else are they saying? Is it that violence is so normalized that we become almost catatonic in any situation that is not overtly sexual or violent? confused...It was one of those movies i had to look up on wikipedia afterwards to double check that i actually understood what happened and unfortunately i did, and it was just weirdly dry! but they spoke french for a lot of the movie so…..art!!!
